Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system suitable for laptops, servers and desktops. It has different kinds of applications like documents, spreadsheets, presentations, instant messaging, web browsers and many more. Ubuntu is an African word. It means ‘humanity to others’ or ‘I am what I am because of who we all are.’ The Ubuntu distribution spreads the spirit of Ubuntu in the software world. Ubuntu can be used free of charge. There is no need of any licensing fees. It is possible to download, use and share Ubuntu with the friends, family, at school or business for no cost. A new desktop and server release is issued after each six months. In this way, it is possible to offer the latest applications in the open source world. Ubuntu has total commercial support from Canonical and many companies in the world. It has the best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community can furnish. Ubuntu CDs have only free software applications.

Desktop edition

Ubuntu Desktop edition can be used to read email, surf the web and other uses. The installation requires maximum 25 minutes. This edition can be used on PC, 64-bit and Mac architectures. Minimum 256 MB of RAM is necessary to run the desktop install CD. Such installation needs minimum 4 GB disk space. In this edition, when the system is started, the desktop does not have any desktop icons. There exists a default theme. It is possible to easily open, edit and share files with the other users that have other applications. The task bar has an update area. Here, there are updates in the system. There are many types of software in the Ubuntu catalogue.

Server edition

The server edition has a solid foundation of Debian. This is known for the robust server installations and has a powerful heritage for reliable performance and progress. As the business increases, the network increases and more servers and applications are necessary. The Ubuntu server edition has a well-integrated platform that helps to quickly and easily deploy a new server with some standard Internet services like mail, DNS, web, file serving and database management. There are no open ports after the installation and there is only the necessary software available to build a secure server. This edition requires only 15 minutes for installation. In this time, the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) server is ready to work. These four separate components need somebody who is skilled to install and configure them. It takes several hours. Instead, the Ubuntu server edition offers more security, less installation time, less risk of misconfiguration and a lesser cost of ownership. This edition has thin client support using Linux Terminal Server Project. The advantages of such a client support are simplified management, fully automatic installation and setup, lower TCO through shared resources, quick failure recovery and locally attached devices.
